Our minds are incredibly powerful, and one of the unique features is the ability to visualize: an experience, a creation, or an outcome. There is a large body of research on the effects of purposeful visualization for performance. You may have come across some of these stories – going back to Vietnam POWs visualizing their golf game to keep themselves occupied during imprisonment and then on release experiencing their golf game having significantly improved without having played in years. Back in the 1960s or so, it came to light that the Russian Olympic athletes were using visualization in their training. Since then, many studies have focused on creative performance and mental performance in addition to physical performance. You may already be using visualization in your work and life. Maybe you’ve created a vision board or journaled an ideal day. This week’s practice will build on those skills, and if you haven’t practiced visualization before, you are in for a powerful treat.
